Questions and Answer

1) Why did you choose to work in libraries?

It may simply be a matter of slow gravitational pull that led me to libraries. I love the combination of service to others, and the variety of content that I deal with on a daily basis. One patron may need help with 17th century  books on ophthalmology, and the next may have questions about the permanence of QuickTime files. The lifecycle of content through the library is also quite compelling. Although many think of the library as a source to access books, we assist with content creation, access, archives, and more.

2) What projects or initiatives are you most excited about at your library?

The growth in student-oriented works in our institutional repository is exciting. We are in the process of depositing the annual Medical Student Research Forum posters, which down the road are sometimes cited when it is time for residency applications. At the same time, we have just digitized and added some unique student-created newsletters from the 1960s and 1970s.

3) What is your most memorable TDL experience?

Exchanging ideas and learning about new processes with librarians from Mexico at one of the Texas Conference on Digital Libraries. This also happened to be the same year that I volunteered with the conference committee, and it was gratifying to see that we had attendance from other countries.
