After three years in the virtual space, the Texas Conferences on Digital Libraries will be held in-person, and we could not be more excited to welcome you back to Austin. Hi… how are you? As we reunite face-to-face, we’ll pause to reflect on all that has changed, especially ourselves and our workplaces, and forge a path forward together.

Our work centers on increasing equitable access to digital materials, valuing the individual, celebrating differences, eliminating barriers, and providing space everyone can fully participate in. Let’s share how we work at work, how we work together, and how we work through challenges old and new.

TOPIC IDEAS

Topics of interest to people working in digital libraries are welcome at the Texas Conference on Digital Libraries. Our conference is open to all who work in, use, and promote digital scholarship and digital collections. Use the following list of topic ideas to inspire your TCDL presentation or an idea of your design.

Finding meaning and balance while handling many roles
Sharing and incorporating perspectives from underrepresented/minoritized communities/narratives
Creating, promoting, preserving, or managing digital projects and/or assets
Creating software or developing applications for nonprofit GLAM institutions
Supporting campus initiatives using institutional repositories or other digital library systems
Open Access, Open Education, or other Open initiatives
Transitional states in our workplace with retirements, switching roles, and moving to new institutions
Panel discussions from upper management and/or library HR departments about hiring, promotions, organizational changes and re-orgs, and navigating the politics of recruitments & upward mobility (external and internal hirings)
Social interoperability and collaborations across departments, schools, and/or institutions (making ourselves and the systems we use work with others and their systems)
Integrating digital systems into new spaces or roles
Digital preservation projects, workflows, challenges, and wins
Transitioning projects when there are multiple and/or conflicting priorities (messy or smooth pivots welcome!)
Diversity, Accessibility, and Inclusion action work in the library & archives: struggles, dreams, wins, challenges, approaches, and next steps

PRESENTATION & SESSION TYPES

TCDL 2023 will take place in person at the Commons Conference Center in Austin, Texas. All sessions will be moderated by a member of the TCDL Conference Planning Committee.

Presentations –

General talks on practical work, theoretical or speculative issues, or ongoing completed research

Timeframe: 15-20 minutes; 10 minutes for Q&A
Format: Live in-person presentation; Q&A
Session length: Presentations are usually paired by topic / theme for two or three presentations per hour-long session.

Panels –

Discussion about a specific topic amongst a selected group of experts who share differing perspectives

Timeframe: 40 minutes; 10 minutes for Q&A
Format: Live in-person discussion; Q&A
Session length: 50 minutes

20 x 20 Lightning Talks –

Short talks on practical work, theoretical or speculative issues, or ongoing or completed research.

Timeframe: 6.5 minutes; 20 slides with 20 seconds of commentary for each slide
Format: In-person presentation; moderated Q&A
Session length: Pecha Kucha-styled presentations are grouped by topic / theme for a session.

Posters –

Posters with a 1 minute timed explanation / “elevator pitch.”

Timeframe: 1 minute “elevator talk” of your poster
Format: Printed Poster for exhibition; one-minute timed explanation of your poster at the Poster Minute-Madness session
Session Length: Poster will be available from the evening reception throughout the remainder of the conference.

Workshops / Demonstrations –

In-depth instruction on important areas of digital library practice or demonstrations/tutorials of useful tools and technologies.

Timeframe: Events in this category can range from 1 to 4 hours
Format: In-person Workshops and Demonstrations
Session length: Workshops are a single, stand-alone session.
Proposals should include: Objectives/outcomes for the session, Target audience, Tech requirements, Prerequisite knowledge or experience, Time expectation

Birds-of-a-Feather –

Roundtable discussions about a particular topic.

Timeframe: 45 to 50 minutes
Format: In-person gathering
Session length: Roundtable discussions are a stand-alone session.
Proposals should include: Topic of discussion, Intended audience, and Agenda for meeting

Joint Feedback Sessions –

This year, TCDL will be combining the Idea Lab (previously named “Reverse Workshop”) with Show and Fail sessions to create short engaging conversations built around collaboration, taking risks, providing guidance, sharing ideas, and planning next steps.

The session lengths, depending on proposals, will be grouped by theme for cohesive discussion sessions.

With the Idea Lab, presenters will bring a particular problem or issue to the table with a small presentation followed by a structured discussion centered around next steps.

With Show and Fail, presenters will share new projects or initiatives that didn’t pan out as well as they thought in a low-stakes environment to get new insight.

Session attendees will be given the opportunity to share verbally with the presenters or to share ideas in a feedback form that will be given directly to the presenters.

Timeframe: 20 minutes (10 minutes of presentations, 10 minutes discussion)
NOTE: If you propose a longer Idea Lab session, please indicate your needs by responding to “Anything else you would like us to know about your proposal?” in the submission form
Format: In-person presentation and roundtable discussion
Session length: Roundtable discussion, paired by topic / theme for two or three presentations per hour-long session
Proposals should include: Problem/issue or project to be discussed, Target audience, Tech requirements, Prerequisite knowledge or experience, Keywords

Idea Lab –

Brainstorming session about a particular problem or issue that is at the beginning stages or in a state of stagnation. This session type will allow the presenter to describe a problem or issue within their institution and seek real-time feedback and strategies from attendees. Continued collaboration post-conference encouraged! The issue presented should be relatable to people working in digital libraries and archives.

Show and Fail –

Short talks about programs, initiatives, workflows, or strategies you lead or participated in at your library that didn’t work out as hoped. This session type will celebrate risk-taking and experimentation rather than a traditional view of success.

Since 2007, the Texas Conference on Digital Libraries (TCDL) has provided a home for communities of library, archives, and information workers who support scholarly output, cultural heritage, educational materials, open access, open source, and transparency in libraries through digital preservation, repositories, metadata, theses and dissertations, scholarly communications, open education, and research data management. TCDL honors its roots in digital librarianship while also including the work that many other library workers, archivists, and various information professionals do to build, improve, provide outreach, expand, and use digital library resources and ecosystems of scholarship.

As founder and host of TCDL, Texas Digital Library is committed to dismantling white supremacy within our organization and associated communities, addressing inequities in our staff organization and the broader consortium, and helping transform practice and culture in the larger higher education and cultural heritage communities in which we operate.
