Reflecting on TCDL 2023

After three years of virtual gatherings, the Texas Conferences on Digital Libraries convened again in-person May 16-18, 2023. The conference took place at the Commons Conference Center in Austin, Texas.

The theme of the 2023 conference – Hi… How are you? – celebrated our return to Austin, and to face-to-face conferencing. The phrase, which references the iconic Austin mural by Daniel Johnston, allowed us to reflect on all that has changed since we last convened in 2019, and to begin forging a new path together.

Challenging our communities

Author, librarian, facilitator, and educator Sofia Leung opened the conference with a keynote address entitled “What is at Work in All of This Work?” Sofia challenged attendees to envision a future of librarianship where we work to dismantle white supremacy and racism in our daily work and in library systems. As librarians and information professionals, Leung aims for us not to be gatekeepers to knowledge or collections but to work as architects to build bridges and connect people to vast knowledges held on Earth. The Texas Conference on Digital Libraries was generously supported by our sponsor, EBSCO, a provider of research databases, e-journals, magazine subscriptions, ebooks and discovery service for academic libraries.

We are also grateful to TDL’s institutional members, whose membership underwrites and plans conference programming.

Thank you!

TDL is grateful to all of the volunteers, attendees, and speakers who made TCDL 2023 a success, and a return to form as a face-to-face community gathering and high quality professional development opportunity.
